ADVOCACY

The Association CEO, Legislative Committee Chairman, and members of the legislative committee monitor all insurance related legislation on your behalf during sessions of the Maryland General Assembly. The Association has been involved in the passage of a number of legislative proposals helpful to the Independent Agent and the Maryland Assembly. Conversely, we have successfully opposed measures which would have been counter-productive.

The Big "I" Government Affairs team has your back as it continually advocates for independent agents on Capitol Hill - both on the front lines and behind the scenes. Big "I" leadership continues to be ranked as one of the top D.C. lobbyists, the only insurance agent or broker group to make the list.

Maryland General Assembly

Bills that are introduced to the Maryland General Assembly that pertain to insurance are predominantly introduced in two committees, Senate Finance and the House Economic Matters Committee. It is important to note what an impact your grassroots efforts have on decisions made by our legislators. You can assist the Big I Maryland by contacting your elected officials and providing them with your views on legislation that will impact your business.

MAPAC

Big I Maryland was instrumental in the organization and development of the Maryland Agents Political Action Committee (MAPAC). This is a separate, non-profit, non-partisan, political action committee. It functions to aid those candidates for legislative or statewide office who understand the problems and needs of the independent agent.

Supporting MAPAC shows you support your profession, that you are committed to helping ensure you and other independent agents can prosper now and in the future. To be an effective advocate on your behalf, Big I Maryland must have strong relationships with every elected state official who supports laws and regulations that are favorable to the independent insurance agency business.

Under state election law, a political action committee can only accept contributions made with personal funds, so MAPAC depends entirely on support from our individual members - no company or corporate funds are allowed. Truly, it's personal contributions from Big I Maryland members like you that makes MAPAC strong and effective. We count on your support to ensure that our advocacy work has the financial strength and impact needed to make a difference for you!

InsurPac raises and distributes approximately $2.4 million each election cycle, making it one of the largest small business PACs in the country. It is funded by voluntary, personal, LLC and Partnership contributions from independent agents, brokers and agencies throughout the country. It works hand in hand with the Big I advocacy team to promote, protect and perpetuate the independent agency system. Last year was a record setting year for InsurPac, as it raised nearly $1.25 million. A total of 3,660 investors gave between $5 and the maximum of $5,000.
